Sharmila Goswami
Co-founder & President
Sharmila Goswami’s three-decade-long journey in the development sector began in 1993 when, as a young Ph.D. scholar, she was inspired by the struggles of women living in Delhi’s urban peripheries. This early experience fuelled her passion for addressing gender inequality and led her to work with women’s development groups, advocating for the socio-economic and political inclusion of women in rural, urban, and peri-urban communities and addressing livelihood and public health concerns of vulnerable populations. Her career has since taken her across India—from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat and drought-prone regions of Andhra Pradesh—where she has engaged with both national and international NGOs to address social exclusion and evaluate the impact of social policies. Endorsing a rights-based approach to development, she has furthered her understanding in the field of human rights law. Throughout her tenure at multilateral and bilateral organizations, Sharmila has consistently worked to identify and implement transformative solutions for disadvantaged populations not only in India but in South Asia as well.
As the Co-founder and President of Udbaru Foundation, she brings her rich expertise and unwavering commitment to driving social change, fostering a narrative of progress and empowerment in India’s most vulnerable communities. Sharmila did her M.Phil in Social Anthropology from the University of Delhi and pursued her M.S in Development Economics from the University of Wales, Swansea, UK.
